NB Financial Aid

Issue date: 5/6/09 Section: Campus and Community
The staff at the Middlesex County College New Brunswick campus is making a strong initiative to reach out to the community in efforts to educate its citizens on financial literacy and preparing for college.
Evelyn J. Rosa, director of MCC's New Brunswick center said, "We do a lot of cross collaborative with other community partners. For example, during tax season we offered a free tax preparation workshop, which was even more successful than last year."
"[This past] 2008 tax season, the community surpassed their projected returns by over $300,000," said Rosa.
Rosa said her staff works hard to inform the community about the resources and assistance that MCC offers.
The buzz about the available resources reaches surrounding communities as well. Julie Nemetz and Nina Kaden, parents of prospective students residing in North Brunswick, attended the financial aid workshop held at the New Brunswick center Wednesday, April 23 at 6 p.m.
Nemetz came to the workshop because she has a 21-year-old son who will graduate from MCC in May 2009 and is planning to transfer to a four-year college. She used this workshop mainly as a refresher on how to complete the FASFA forms.
Kaden went to the workshop to find out about applying for financial aid for her 16-year-old daughter who will soon graduate from high school.
Lus Mercedes Tapia, New Brunswick center assistant, and Jillimah Barker, a client services representative from NJHESAA (New Jersey Higher Education Student Assistance Authority) conducted this bi-monthly financial aid workshop.
Prospective students, parents and grandparents of prospective students all showed up with a total of 33 in attendance. The aim of the workshop was to help the attendees walk through the steps in applying for financial aid and completing the online FASFA forms.
Tapia, who helped conduct the workshop, is an intricate part of the community outreach initiative. She acts as a liaison between the New Brunswick center and the main campus in Edison.
