"There were a total of 150-175 people who won the first level award. It's an achievement to be one of the seven people chosen from your entire club," said Daly.
Upon entering the ballroom, students were directed to the side table where they gave their name and collected their first level award. Once students received their certificate, they were directed to the tables that were placed strategically in a u-shape to surround the front of the room. The tables, which accommodated 8-10 people, were set with white linens and center pieces full of blooming flowers.
Along the back row of tables, a buffet was set up and once students chose their table, they were encouraged to grab a plate full of lunch before the ceremony started. In the forefront of the room sat a podium and a rectangular shaped table full of blue and white umbrellas.
The ceremony started promptly at 2:15 p.m. with introductions by Terry McGlincy, director of Student Activities and College Center. After introducing the event, staff and the new member of Student Activities, Kasey Drennen, assistant director of Student Activities and College Center, McGlincy gave the floor to Daly and Drennen.
Daly and Drennen spoke for a few minutes before presenting the second level leadership awards to the 2008-2009 recipients: Biagiottie Alexandre, Cristian F. Abreu, Christopher D. Antoine, Lisa Rose Beard, Jhoany S. Benitez, Gina Butrico, Angelo Cataldi, Ashley C. Castiglia, Ayla V. Clinton, Samantha Clinton, Ankit Dhuper, Brittany R. Estrella, Queen G. Fontanez, Susan P. Fox, Jessica L. Kelly, Angelina R. Mannino, Frank Morales, Joel J. Morales, Joy J. Pinero-Deniz, Renina Powell, Federico Zanetta Perdomo, Andrew E. Power, Nevetha Rajendran, Richard Riano, Jason Rodriguez, Asma Sadiq, Dia Sanders, Kinjal Sheth, Hilda N. Segura, Sierra M. Spann, Monica R. Sztam, Deidre N. Tossie, Shirit Ungar, Livia Vendelova, Elisaul Valdez, Opeyemi Windapo, Tawana D. Williams, Pietesha Wright and Ruchik N.Yajnik.
Once all second level awards were received, Daly and Drennen introduced Marla D. Brinson, dean of Enrollment and Student Support Services and McGlincy who were introducing the third level awards. The recipients of the 2008-2009 third level awards were: Federico Zanetta Perdomo, Tawana Williams, Nevetha Rajendran, Kinjal Sheth and Monica R. Sztam. After all students received their awards, Daly came back up to the podium for a special announcement and recognition award.
After more than 25 years as director of Student Activities, McGlincy is stepping down, said Daly. The staff of Student Activities took the end of the ceremony to present McGlincy with an award for his service and dedication to MCC. The ceremony ended not long after and students were allowed to stay a bit longer to talk and spend time with fellow peers.
"Not everybody simply because you participate in MCC extracurricular activities gets to be invited to this dinner. It requires your advisor to recommend only eight people from every organization," said McGlincy. "That means you must have been doing something with your organization to be recognized by your advisor as one of the key people for you club. It's an achievement and everyone who won an award here today should be proud."
