The Middlesex County College Colts baseball team is in the middle of a somewhat disappointing campaign. The team has had some struggles offensively, but when the team is hitting the ball consistently, they experience a tremendous level of success. One of the sluggers the Colts have relied heavily on during the spring is sophomore shortstop Sean DiGrazia.
"He's an all around good player," said sophomore outfielder Jason Mickley, "he can hit, plays a good defense and stays in the game."
DiGrazia, in his second year of enrollment at MCC, graduated in 2007 from Middlesex High School. At MCC, DiGrazia is majoring in liberal arts exercise science with the ultimate goal to further his education and baseball career at either Kean University or William Patterson University.
Throughout the course of his entire life, the 19-year-old has been watching and playing baseball as far back as he can remember. As a shortstop by trade and a die-hard New York Yankee fan, so it is only natural that DiGrazia idolized the Yankee's captain and shortstop, Derek Jeter as a kid. In addition to the dedication and passion DiGrazia takes from Jeter, he also cites his father as a big influence on his career.
"My dad taught me how to play the game when I was young," said DiGrazia, "I was pretty good and it all came pretty easy to me too."
DiGrazia has always found himself playing the game as often as possible. His current success has much to do with his involvement in participating on two junior and senior American Legion teams and an AAU team to go along with his two varsity letter winning seasons at Middlesex High School.
During his senior season at Middlesex, DiGrazia was a key cog in his team run to a State Championship victory. His three-run home run propelled the Blue Jays to a thrilling five-run come from behind win in the biggest game of his life. DiGrazia regards that to be the signature moment of his career up to this point.
When this season began in early March, DiGrazia's goal for the year aside from winning the conference title was to improve on his batting average from a year ago.
"I came in a lot bigger and stronger," said DiGrazia, "I'm hitting a lot better than last year."
It has certainly shown at the plate, as DiGrazia has hit a stellar.333 with 14 RBI's to help propel the Colts recently surging offense.
DiGrazia chose playing for MCC over other schools because of the tight and strict demeanor of the coaching staff.
"The coaching staff is strict, but I like it better strict," said DiGrazia, "you're also playing with a lot of local guys that I played with and against in the past, it's more mature now. We all want to do good for each other. It's a lot more of a team effort here at MCC."
With a 15-11 mark, DiGrazia is still a firm believer in the Colts chances to reach the NJCAA National Baseball Championships in Texas later this summer.
"We just have to come together, and come up bigger then we have with the bats; there's no reason why we can't," said DiGrazia.
